2/3rds of the women in Cambodia are under 25 years old. Somewhere near 20% of young women are illiterate compared to 15% of men.
In 2008, the ratio of girls to boys in upper secondary school was 75% and only 50% in tertiary education.
Despite progress having been made in recent years to improve girls’ access to education, there is still a gender-based inequality, particularly in rural areas.
In 2005/2006, 12.1 percent of girls dropped out of primary school, which was down to 8.7 percent in 2011/2012, according to data from the national Educational Management Information System.
